PERU

NATURAL GESHA

Our first ever Peru release is finally here and it is absolutely stunning. We have been waiting to bring you this coffee and it was more than worth the wait. This is a Natural Gesha from Marcos Herrera, one of the most exciting producers in Peru right now. In 2024, this very lot placed fourteenth in the Cup of Excellence. We made sure to reserve it early and we are so glad we did because otherwise it would have gone straight to auction.

Marcos grows coffee in the village of Rodriguez Tafur at seventeen hundred meters above sea level in the Amazonas region. He has been farming since he was a kid and today he runs the Mamaruntu farm with his wife Kary and their son Marko. The name Mamaruntu comes from a legendary Chachapoyas princess and the farm itself carries deep family history. It was originally called Oso Perdido in honor of Marcos’s father who tended the land alone for years.

For this Gesha, Marcos follows a process that is becoming his signature. Only fully ripe cherries are selected, washed in clean water, and fermented in sealed plastic tubs for seventy two hours. After fermentation, the whole fruit is slowly dried in solar dryers for thirty days until it reaches a moisture content of around ten point five to eleven percent. The result is a cup that is clean, expressive, and deeply layered.

You can expect bright tropical acidity, purple grape sweetness, a textured and complex mouthfeel, and a long floral finish. This is one of our favorite coffees of the year and the perfect way to begin our journey in Peru.
