KENYA
WASHED GEISHA
This is a groundbreaking discovery, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share it with you. On our very first visit to Kenya, we came across something we never expected to find a Geisha, grown in a land known almost exclusively for SL varieties, Ruiru 11, and Batian. This is an incredibly rare lot, and to our knowledge, it may be the first Geisha ever cultivated in Kenya.
The farm’s fourth harvest comes from trees planted in 2017, a young but already promising crop. The cherries were carefully handpicked at peak ripeness, then held for 12 hours in breathable bags before pulping the next morning at 9 AM. From there, the coffee underwent a two-stage fermentation, first for 24 hours in perforated buckets, followed by a 22-24 hour dry fermentation before being washed and meticulously sun-dried to 9-10% moisture.
But what makes this discovery even more extraordinary is the full-circle journey of Gesha itself. Though Geisha was originally identified by a research team in Nairobi, it was never cultivated in Kenya. Instead, it traveled to Tanzania, then to Costa Rica, and finally to Panama, where it became the legendary variety we know today. Now, after nearly a century, Geisha has returned to its origins in East Africa, right here in Kenya.
This is a truly historic moment, and we’re beyond excited to share it with you. This Geisha is floral, elegant, and refined, with delicate fruit notes, citrus brightness, and silky sweetness, a profile unlike anything we’ve ever tasted from Kenya. With only a limited release available, this is a coffee that will be remembered for years to come.
